Aphrodite’s Wrath is inspired by the ancient Greek myth in which Aphrodite (the goddess of love and beauty) becomes extremely jealous of Psyche, a mortal woman worshiped for her beauty. The goddess sends her son, Eros, to take revenge on Psyche. At the same time, Psyche watches her sisters get married, but although Psyche is hugely admired, no man truly loves her.
My artwork portrays Psyche’s loneliness, as well as how Aphrodite is blinded and controlled by jealousy. I thought this myth was a great way to describe the internal pressure many women feel to fit societal beauty standards, while at the same time showing that beauty is not everything.
